900 Billion Dollar Valuation. What This Means for You if You Use AI Tools.

A 900 billion dollar valuation isn't a quality indicator. It's a risk signal. Anyone who overlooks this and builds their workflow on a single AI provider is making a business decision based on capital market dynamics they don't control.

According to TechCrunch, Anthropic is pursuing a new funding round of up to 50 billion dollars, at a valuation between 850 and 900 billion. For comparison: BMW, Siemens, and BASF combined don't reach this value. A company that hasn't posted a profit yet.

#What This Number Actually Says

According to TechCrunch, Anthropic's revenue run rate currently sits at around 40 billion dollars annually, compared to about 9 billion at the end of 2025. The growth is real and impressive. But between 40 billion in revenue and 900 billion in valuation lies a factor of over 20. This isn't a rational valuation, it's a bet.

Investors aren't buying Anthropic as it is today. They're buying Anthropic as they hope it will look in five years. And because nobody wants to miss out, they're outbidding each other. According to TechCrunch, an institutional investor was willing to commit five billion dollars and still hasn't gotten a meeting with the CFO. So much for sober capital allocation.

This isn't normal startup growth anymore. This is Fear of Missing Out at an institutional level.

#Why I Care as a Craftsman

I'm not an investor. I use these tools to deliver better work faster. Claude for certain writing tasks, other models for other purposes. Anthropic's valuation doesn't matter to me.

But the question behind it isn't irrelevant: What happens to price and access when this much capital flows into so few providers?

When Anthropic goes public with a 900 billion valuation, the company will eventually need profits that justify this valuation. Those don't come out of thin air. They come from the prices users pay. Or from features that move behind paywalls. Or from terms that change quietly because shareholder pressure is greater than customer retention pressure.

This isn't a conspiracy theory, this is normal business.

#The Real Problem: Dependency

Anyone who builds their entire AI workflow on Claude today is in a similar situation to someone who built their complete infrastructure on a single cloud provider in 2010, without a backup plan. As long as everything works, it's convenient. When something changes, the rebuild effort is high.

Providers can pivot. Prices can rise. APIs can change or be deprecated. And for a company with a 900 billion valuation without profits, the scenario of something fundamentally changing isn't an abstract possibility, but a likely event in the coming years.

OpenAI showed how it's done: price changes, model deprecations, access changes for certain user groups. Anthropic won't be an exception once capital pressure shifts toward profitability.

#What You Can Actually Do

This doesn't mean giving up AI tools. It means using them smartly.

First point: No single point of failure. If your workflow depends entirely on one provider, build yourself a second path. This doesn't have to be elaborate. Anyone using Claude should know how to accomplish the same task with a different model. GPT-4o, Gemini, local models like Llama, depending on the use case.

Second point: Build in an abstraction layer. Anyone integrating AI into processes should build it so the provider is interchangeable. Tools like LiteLLM or OpenRouter enable exactly that: You call one API, behind it you can switch providers without touching the rest.

Third point: Monitor prices. Not weekly, but quarterly. If a provider quietly raises their prices, you won't notice until it shows up on the invoice.

Fourth point: Build your own competence, not just tool dependency. Anyone who understands what a language model does well and what it doesn't can switch faster, because they don't know the tool, they know the principle behind it.

#Reading the Valuation as a Warning Signal

Anthropic's growth is impressive. The product works. But a 900 billion valuation with no profit yet means very much has to go very right very quickly for this bet to pay off. And if it doesn't pay off, the consequences won't be felt by investors first, but by users.

That's the point. Anthropic isn't the problem. The mechanism is.
